Our City Break to Wroclaw
The only problem I had with the whole city was how to pronounce Wroclaw (joke) !! So this will help lol !!! Wroclaw = Vrotswav
Its approx. 2.5 hour flight from Dublin and taxi from the airport is approx. 15 mins
Who should go to this city ?
I think this city break will tick a lot of boxes. We went as a family of 2ad 1child age 9. We booked a hotel right off the Old Town Square which for us was a perfect location.
Wroclaw is not your typical European city that everyone is looking to go to but I have to say we really enjoyed it, if your looking for history – tick – shopping – tick – food – tick – drink – tick – chilled vibes – tick- night life – tick. Whether its couples families girlie or guys trip I think it will suit everyone. It’s a yes from me, give it a try you wont be disappointed !! Here is what all we done on our break !!
Wroclaw Electric Car trip
I think this is your first port of call when arriving in Wroclaw, its not expensive you can do a private car tour, we paid approx. €100 for 2 hours private tour, a group tour will be cheaper. You will get to see all around the city with some stops to take picture opportunities. It’s a great way to get all the history of the city at a glance then whatever you are interested in seeing in more depth you can go back and do at your leisure. The whole city is compact so you can walk or grab an uber if the legs cant take it !
Wroclaw Dwarfs or Gnomes
You will see little Dwarfs/Gnomes spotted everywhere all over the city. There are over 800 of them. They are a symbol of the anti Communist movement in Poland. Each Dwarf has a story behind it. It’s a fun activity to try find the Dwarfs, you can buy a map with stickers and fill it in as you find them.
Wroclaw Lamplighter
Wroclaws lamp lighting is a tradition since the first gas lantern was lit in 1846. Every evening 365 days a year, you can find the Lamplighter 30 minutes before nightfall going around the streets with his very large lighter, lighting the lamps he then wakes up at dawn to put them all out. He is all dressed up in his fancy suit and black cape. You will find lots of tourists like myself running after him to take pictures and videos of this tradition.
Moviegate Museum
You will find the Movie Gate museum just off the old town square, it is a museum underground in an old preserved world war 11 bunker or shelter. The museum has props and costumes from famous movies however I was more interested in going in to see what a bunker was like from the war. You will do the whole museum tour in about an hour.
Wroclaw Zoo & Aquarium
You could spend the whole day in one of Polands biggest Zoos with a huge variety of animals. My favourite part was the Aquarium it is the largest Oceanarium in Poland and it is very impressive. If you are an animal lover then this is definitely a day out for you.
Museum of Illusions Wroclaw
We had such a laugh here, it is fascinating fun and a great atmosphere, you will spend between 1 – 1.5 hours in the museum but you really will enjoy the illusions and how some things work or what way you see them.
Shopping
There are no really shops around the Old Town Square but if you want to shop jump in an Uber (about 10 mins) and you will find Magnaolia Mall, you wont be disappointed as there are more than 250 shops, cafes and restaurants, you will see all your favourite brands here !!
Sky Tower Wroclaw
This is a must see attraction when in Wroclaw. It is one of the tallest buildings in Poland with a staggering 49 floors. There is a large view point on the top with fabulous views over the city. There is also a bar so you can chill up there and enjoy the relaxed vibes and view and have a drink…..or 2 !!
